Culturally Proficient Inclusive Schools

Begun June 29, 2017.
Chapter 1:
"When school goals are developed from mission statements without shared values and clear vision, then goals and action plans will be nebulous and the mission will, again, not address the needs of all students in the school."   Frattura & Capper (2007, p. 41)

Examine your school and district's mission and vision statements.  In what ways are the statements aligned with your values, beliefs, and assumptions?  In what ways are the statements aligned with your day to day actions as a member of the school/district community?  In what ways are the values, beliefs, assumptions, and actions of your colleagues aligned with these vision and mission statements?  What might be some responses to the Grattura and Capper quote when you share it with colleagues?

SRCS Mission: The mission of Santa Rosa City Schools, in partnership with parents, educators, staff, and the community is to provide active, involved learning for all students so they will achieve personal, academic, occupational success and become responsible citizens.
Motto:  Every Student • Every Possibility • No Matter What
Vision:  SRCS is dedicated to excellence in education.

HCMS Mission:  In partnership with our community we will inspire our students to be global thinkers who will thrive in the 21st Century. We are devoted to developing academic excellence, creating a nurturing environment and fostering an innovative approach to learning. We will cultivate in students a desire to understand, a capacity for tolerance, and an ability to appreciate the ethnic and cultural diversity that make up humankind.
Vision Our students will become adaptable, creative thinkers who explore their talents, and set a path to contribute to our ever -changing world.
Motto:  Believe!  Achieve!
21st Century Pledge:  We pledge to provide our students with the support, tools and training for 21st century learning via STEAM*   We will emphasize being flexible, adaptable, self-directed, socially aware, accountable & responsible   Students will become information and media literate and integrate technological practices into the school day.

Both mission statements reflect a desire to partner with the community and to develop learners who are socially responsible.  In HCMS mission and vision, the concept reflects a desire for this for all students.  Our 21st century pledge reflects the use of our resources to create information and media literacy through our almost 1:1 chromebooks, our GAFE platform and our continuous inquiry in SAMR.
